The Ronald Mcdonald House

Back

The Ronald McDonald House is a global network of non-profit organizations dedicated to providing a "home away from home" for families of children receiving medical treatment at nearby hospitals. These houses offer comfortable accommodations, meals, and support services, allowing families to stay together during difficult times without incurring the financial burden of hotel expenses. By easing the logistical and financial strains of medical care, the Ronald McDonald House enables families to focus on what matters most: supporting their child through treatment and recovery. With locations around the world, the Ronald McDonald House has become a beacon of hope and support for families facing medical crises.

My Role:

I have been volunteering at the Ronald Mcdonald House since I was in Grade 7. It is a home away from home for families seeking care for their sick children at Children’s Hospital. In high school I plan and ran various programs including, Art and Crafts, healthy snacks, sports, birthday parties, holiday events and games, and more. I also cooked meals for the families and helped organize and run fundraising events, such as “Light the House,” during Christmas, and Walk for Kids. I also began my own fundraiser in 2021, delivering “Bags of Love,” to support the families during Covid, and spread cheer during the Holiday Season. I have continued my involvement at the Ronald Mcdonald House Los Angeles, taking on a more operational and administrative projects such as organization, inventory, community outreach, and maintenance.

Time Frame:

Highlights

Birthday Parties & Other Events

I plan and run Birthday parties and other fun events for children including weekly arts and crafts, sports, smoothie hour, baking, and fun events and games during holidays such as Halloween or Christmas. This entailed coordinating with sponsors and donors to get supplies for these activites, planning the games and activities each week, as well as setting them up and running them with the kids.

Meals

I often cook meals at the house for families, and have assembled teams within my school, club and sports communities to cook meals with me as well. In addition to cooking various meals, I also do community outreach for the meals for love program; I contact various sponsors to forge food and meal partnership's and to bring in groups to volunteer to cook a meal.

Bags For Love

I began Bags for Love in 2021, when I was in my senior year during COVID-19; it is now an annual fundraiser at my high-school during the holiday season. To bring about the Holiday cheer, BAGS of LOVE brings together my school community assigning each advisory group to work together to curate a bag filled with notes of love and holiday themed trinkets. We deliver over 100 bags to the families of the house each holiday season.

Walk For Kids and Other Fundraisers

I have volunteered to set up and run major fundraisers for the house, notably, Walk for Kids, which is a 5-10km charity walk, and Light up The House, which is a fundraising auction event during the Holidays. At these events I have preformed various roles from poster and sign making and desin, to setting up place holders and decoration, handing out t-shirts, running water stations, or showing people to their seats. These events do so much for the house, and I love being involved and doing the most I can to help.
